Just a Little Hillsboro Information

Hillsboro is the government seat of Washington County and a thriving center of agriculture and high-technology industry. Because of its recent growth, Hillsboro offers exceptional opportunities of employment and education. Yet Hillsboro has retained its small-town charm and tradition—qualities held precious by new and longtime residents, alike.

Job Market & Economy

Many of the world’s largest advanced technology companies call Hillsboro home; its residents work at companies like Epson, Toshiba, Intel, Tektronix, and SolarWorld. Despite these ultramodern companies, the town still boasts such old-fashioned charms as a Saturday Farmer's Market and a downtown drug store complete with a soda fountain and the Venetian dinner theatre. The commercial industry thrives in scenic campus settings that blend with the countryside.

Higher Education

Much of Hillsboro's cultural awareness stems from its close ties to education. Pacific University in Forest Grove, six miles away, claims close ties with Hillsboro. So also does the Portland Community College Rock Creek Campus. Portland State University in downtown Portland is another institution that draws Hillsboro residents. Other colleges and universities such as Portland State University, Willamette University and Lewis & Clark University are located in the area.

Culture, Points of Interest, & Community Events

Buzzing with activity, retail centers, boutiques, and charming little shops thrive in the heart of the city. Plus, Hillsboro is an ideal place to nurture your family’s mind, heart and body with its many community theater productions, libraries, festivals, athletic events and art shows.

Hillsboro's cultural heritage is preserved and made available to today's residents at the Washington County Historical Museum. The museum contains documents, artifacts and photographs of Hillsboro and other communities dating to the early 1800s. It sponsors special events such as the annual Draft Horse Plowing Demonstrations illustrating farming techniques of a century ago. Museum exhibits depict changing lifestyles and conditions in the county over the past 150 years.

When their thoughts turn to the arts, residents turn to the galleries of the Portland Art Museum, the oldest art museum in the Pacific Northwest. They can also see real-life theater productions at the Hillsboro Actors Repertory Theater in downtown Hillsboro. Both amateur and professional actors in the area shine at this popular self-run theater.

Residents can also spend an afternoon indulging in the renowned offerings of various wineries in or around Hillsboro such as Argyle Winery, Champoeg Wine Cellars, Chehalem, Duck Pond Cellars, Erath Vineyards, Rex Hill Vineyards and Sokol Blosser Vineyards. The Oak Knoll Winery, for example, produces an award-winning pinot noir, Riesling and chardonnay wines.

One of the most popular events is the U.S. West Rose Festival Airshow presented by Intel. The show brings 80,000 plus people to the Hillsboro Airport each summer for one of the nation's best aerobatic extravaganzas. The Hillsboro Rotary July 4 Parade is one of Oregon's largest and best. Happy Days, a community festival that dates back nearly a century, complements the Independence Day celebration with a carnival, music, and fireworks. The St. Patrick's Day Parade in March, the Greater Hillsboro Area Chamber of Commerce Savor the Flavor food and wine festival, the chamber's trade fair, and Moonlight and Roses fun evening of games and auctions also are highlights.

Recreation

Recreational and seasonal event opportunities abound in this tight-knit community. Sports include golf, swimming, boating and fishing. Team sports are played at the state-of-the-art Gordon Faber Recreation Complex. The Hillsboro Aquatic Center has everything water lovers need including a 25-meter L shaped swimming pool, saunas, a hydrotherapy pool and exercise facilities. Hagg Lake provides additional opportunities for water recreation. The 1,132-acre reservoir offers great fishing for rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, brown bullhead and yellow perch. Fishing season runs from late April through October.

Locals often indulge themselves in relaxing at the 710-acre Jackson Bottom Wetland Preserve. It offers superior resources for services related to wetlands and aquatic education in the metro region. Nine golf courses are located in the area including the Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club that hosts the annual Fred Meyer Challenge.
